What exactly do we use ibuprofen for? (To the left you can see the chemical formula for ibuprofen) Prescription ibuprofen is used to aleviate pain, tenderness, swelling, and stiffness caused by many things including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, menstrual pain, etc. Nonprescription ibuprofen is used to lessen a fever, and to ease pain from headaches, muscle aches, arthritis, menstrual periods, the common cold, toothaches, and backaches. Ibuprofen is considered to be an NSAIDs. It works by stopping the body from generating substances that causes pain, fever, and inflammation.
